I had an argument with someone over communication differences and past grievances. What would’ve been a good night out became a plastic backdrop for the proverbial fallout. Shattered pride was defended ferociously, and jabs were made on hearts softened from healing.

Everything in that moment moved so fast, meant so much, and struck so deep.

Now I’m watching CNN of the live coverage of the 8.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Japan, leading to fires, tsunamis, and mudslides. People are signaling helicopters with white flags. Airports and farmlands are inundated. Cars were swept into the ocean. People have perished. Warnings of this quake have become transnational…

Suddenly what happened earlier in the evening, in the day, seemed much less significant.

In wake of seeing the destruction and devastation ravaging the land of the rising sun, differences are reconciled in the sight of a great equalizer of perspective. A reminder of what is truly important in life, found in its contrast, and in the greater scheme of things, where we need to put our energy and love into.

My thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by the earthquake in Japan, and around the world.
